Individuals who struggle with cognitive disabilities can be especially vulnerable to sexual exploitation and can exhibit sexually inappropriate behaviors. Educating clients and their caregivers around a variety of sexual issues while focusing on safety is essential for therapeutic success. This telecourse will provide participants with an overview of the impact sexual exploitation has on this population. Participants will learn ways to problem solve around the sensitive issues related to client sexual behaviors, both appropriate and inappropriate. The United States incarcerates more persons per capita than any other civilized nation in the world. The chances are that most Americans either have had a family member or know someone who is incarcerated or has had involvement with the criminal justice system. 95% of all offenders who are incarcerated will be released to a community upon completion of their sentences. This group of special needs clients will more than likely be requesting assistance from agencies that provide services for those with disabilities. This course will explore the psychological effects of incarceration, and the potential impact it may have on an ex-offender client. Strategies to effectively work with this offender population will be explored. Special consideration will be given to know what to expect from this client upon reentry, and targeting of specific need areas for the employment of this population.

Motivational Interviewing is an evidenced-based approach to overcoming the ambivalence that keeps a lot of us from making that crucial decision we need to make to get where we want to be. Studies have shown that when therapists use motivational interviewing techniques, the chances of the client making life changes are improved. This course will explore the history, theory, and techniques of MI. Participants’ will learn how to “roll with resistance”, elicit “change talk”, as well as how to “dance instead of wrestle” with clients. Participant will have an opportunity to bring actual cases to the table and explore ways to use MI techniques to move the case forward.
 

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel your registration prior to the training, you may either send a substitute participant or use this payment as a credit toward a future training. If you do not cancel and do not attend the training, you will still be responsible for the fee. You must cancel 2 business days prior to the start date of the training. Cancellations are not accepted for teleclasses.
