The chances are that most Americans either have had a family member or know someone who is incarcerated or has had involvement with the criminal justice system. 95% of all offenders who are incarcerated will be released to a community upon completion of their sentences. This group of special needs clients will more than likely be requesting assistance from agencies that provide services for those with disabilities. This course will explore the psychological effects of incarceration, and the potential impact it may have on an ex-offender client. Motivational Interviewing is an evidenced-based approach to overcoming the ambivalence that keeps a lot of us from making that crucial decision we need to make to get where we want to be. Studies have shown that when therapists use motivational interviewing techniques, the chances of the client making life changes are improved. This course will explore the history, theory, and techniques of MI. Participants’ will learn how to “roll with resistance”, elicit “change talk”, as well as how to “dance instead of wrestle” with clients.
