The United States incarcerates more persons per capita than any other civilized nation in the world. The chances are that most Americans either have had a family member or know someone who is incarcerated or has had involvement with the criminal justice system. 95% of all offenders who are incarcerated will be released to a community upon completion of their sentences. This group of special needs clients will more than likely be requesting assistance from agencies that provide services for those with disabilities. This course will explore the psychological effects of incarceration, and the potential impact it may have on an ex-offender client. Strategies to effectively work with this offender population will be explored. Special consideration will be given to know what to expect from this client upon reentry, and targeting of specific need areas for the employment of this population.

This class will cover objective and subjective medical information related to selected disabilities ((back impairments, drug and alcohol abuse, developmental disabilities, mental illness, quadriplegia and other mobility impairments). A case study approach will be used to review general medical data, review functional limitations, and evaluate relevant non disability factors, as well as past work experience. The participant will learn how to identify accommodations needed to perform specific job tasks and use this information as well as other relevant data to determine if the person can re-enter the work force without re-training.
