1st Round of CIL Training

Panhandle Independent Living Center

Amarillo, Texas

Training Participants will be the CIL Staff and Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Counselors.

  • CIL and VR staff will have developed a primary collaboration effort with each other regarding transition of youth from school to adult roles.
    1. Participants will have brainstormed what they can do together and separately to assist young people with disabilities in the transition process.
  • CIL and VR staff will identify and begin to develop and plan for the contributions they can make to add value to the transition process in their community.
    1. Participants will understand how to develop a strategic plan for making their contribution to the transition process.
  • CIL and VR staff will be prepared to take the lead and/or actively participate in bringing other important collaborators to the table and building supports for young people with disabilities making the transition from school to adult roles in the community.
    1. Participants will understand and be able to articulate the elements of collaboration.
    2. Participants will be able to lead collaborators in developing a common vision.
  1. CIL and VR staff will understand the structure and legislative requirements of transition services in Texas.
    • Participants will become familiar with the federal and state requirements for coordination of transition services between VR and public schools for students receiving special education services.
    • Participants will develop a basic awareness of Texas public school structure and operations, particularly related to serving students with disabilities.
    • Participants will identify critical components of transition planning for students receiving special education and gain a working knowledge of the procedural requirements in the development of a student’s individualized education program (IEP).
    • Participants will recognize the value of effective interagency coordination and the important role of the community in providing additional transition services and supports for youth.
