Leadership Foundations in the Disability Community

The introductory session of the Community Leadership Institute for Change Knowledge prepares participants for the entire learning experience. The foundational philosophy is built upon principles of the Rehabilitation Act, personal accountability, and the value of relationships to build communities of practice. In this session, participants will receive an orientation to the requirements and expectations for a successful experience in the 18-month course of CLICK. Participants will be introduced to an overview of Project Management Principles in preparation for continued work in the next CLICK session.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Understand the philosophical foundations for CLICK
- Gain knowledge of a Personal Accountability Model and Practical Coaching strategies
- Understand the requirements for successful completion of CLICK

Session #2 – March 18-20, 2008
Grow Your Own: Leadership and Behavior

The Situational Leadership® Model is the most widely used leadership model in the world today. Based on the simple principle of “diagnosis before prescription,” the model helps to enhance skill in influencing the performance of others within and beyond the organization. The Situational Leadership model will be presented in conjunction with a powerful self assessment tool – the “DISC”. The DISC is a four factor behavioral profile that helps individuals to understand themselves and others. Through this combined approach, participants will become aware of how their behavior may impact others, how their communication choices may be perceived by others, and how to maximize their unique talents to contribute to any working group. In addition, the value of diversity as a strategic advantage in goal accomplishment will be emphasized.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Understand a diagnostic process for the needs of followers
- Gain clarity about maximizing individual potential
- regardless of differences
- Gain self awareness
- Understand the value of diverse contributions to working groups

Session #3 – July 7-11, 2008
Managing from the Inside Out: Ourselves, Others and Projects

This week-long session will provide the complete training program in the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People® including tools from the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Managers®. This powerful, well- established program leads participants to their own personal development plan with strategies for effective implementation. Participants will be asked to apply their learning to group projects that will build a community of practice during their CLICK experience.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Understand the foundational principles of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People®
- Demonstrate how the Seven Habits® represent a holistic, integrated approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness
- Apply tools and knowledge to the development of a CLICK project
Session #4 – October, 2008 (specific dates to be determined)
The Bottom Line (using Video Conferencing)

The “Bottom Line” is multi-faceted in publicly funded organizations. The financial “bottom line” is one important element. However there are also “bottom-lines” in terms of meeting public expectations, compliance with service and documentation reporting, and involvement with measurements of effectiveness as reflected in “evidence-based practice”. This session will explore the multiple facets related to finance and measurement in the public rehabilitation field.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Be aware of the underlying mathematical formulas that structure the financial disbursement of funds within the public vocational rehabilitation field.
- Be aware of measurement tools used by the federal government to assess effectiveness of services within public vocational rehabilitation programs.
- Understand basic accounting terminology and activities related to business processes.
Session #5 – February 16-20, 2009
Understanding Change in Individuals & Systems

Understanding change and system dynamics in organizations is a complex art – not a science. This session assists participants in looking at their organization and its component parts in a new way. The impact of the change process on both individuals and the organizational system will be emphasized. In addition, using a framework of systems theory, the complex, technologically dependent organization of the future will be explored.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Develop self awareness of their tolerance for change
- Recognize the natural progression of change in individuals and organizations
- Understand the interdependence of dynamic organizational units
Session #6 – June 1-5, 2009
Reality Check

The final session of CLICK, Reality Check provides a forum for participants to demonstrate their learning. A full week of experiential learning includes presentations of group projects, problem solving and team building activities. Learning objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Recognize circumstances in which different leadership principles apply.
- Apply learning from previous lessons to complex simulated situations.
- Demonstrate clusters of skills related to management, leadership, communication, and project challenges.
