Session 1: March 22 -24, 2005, Austin, TX

Tools of Rehabilitation Leadership: Planning and Forecasting

Planning for the future is a critical leadership skill. The ability to forecast; to create a vision; to establish and implement action plans with built-in accountability, and; to utilize tools that support successful outcomes, gives an effective leader a strong advantage in building a thriving organization.

Objectives:

- Understand the importance of Vision and Mission
- Develop Strategic Planning and Forecasting skills
- Utilize tools for Focus: What Matters Most
- Apply tools for Accountability in Organizations

 

Session 2: June 2005; 2 days over 3, Austin, TX

Personal Values in Rehabilitation Organizations

Self-awareness is an essential element of effective leadership. This session will provide a number of self-assessment tools and feedback to assist participants in creating a personal leadership development plan. Leadership and management skills will be identified and defined.

Objectives:

- Understand the need for Self-awareness and Goal Setting
- Define Leadership – Management Characteristics
- Create a Self-Development Plan
- Demonstrate knowledge of elements of The Leadership Challenge

 

Session 3: October 18-20, 2005; 2 days over 3; Austin, TX

The Context for Rehabilitation Leadership

The best leaders are aware of external relationships and connections to the larger community in which their organizations exist. This session is designed to turn the participants’ attention outward; to increase their understanding of the big picture in society and rehabilitation today.

Objectives:

- Demonstrate knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act
- Understand the current Rehabilitation Environment
- Recognize State Political Structure and its influence on Agency Culture
- Identify the role of Ethics in the rehabilitation framework/foundation

Session 4: February 2006; one week; T Bar M Ranch, New Braunfels, TX

Building a Rehabilitation Team

At the core of successful rehabilitation outcomes, there is a team working to achieve results. The accomplishment of goals and objectives for clients, staff and the organization often takes multiple contributions aligned toward a common result. This week-long session will provide instruction and experiential learning to illustrate basic concepts of synergy and interdependence. It will also provide tools for effective communication and negotiation an

Objectives:

- Demonstrate knowledge of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
- Identify the critical points presented in The Wisdom of Teams
- Understand the role of projects in organizations: Demonstrate Project Management skills
- Experience the trust and role delineation necessary for high functioning teams utilizing ropes courses (Low Ropes/High Ropes)
- Demonstrate skills for Negotiation and Conflict Resolution

 

Session 5: June 2006; 2 days over 3; Austin, TX

The Rehabilitation Coach

Leadership is sometimes defined as having influence with others to achieve results. Situational Leadership offers a framework for leadership behaviors to effectively influence the actions and attitudes of others.

Objectives:

- Demonstrate knowledge of Situational Leadership
- Demonstrate skills of The Practical Coach

 

Session 6: November 2006, 2 days over 3; San Antonio, TX

Leading in a Changing Field

Change happens at increasingly greater rates in the 21st Century. The rehabilitation industry is affected by change in all sectors of the world of work. In addition to responsiveness to change, the rehabilitation field has initiated change in its own identity and structure over time. This session provides help to future leaders for understanding and coping with a dynamic workplace. The last session will also include a dinner and award ceremony for presentation of certificates of completion.

Objectives:

- Demonstrate understanding of the reality of change
Functioning in Chaos
Levels of Comfort with Change
- Demonstrate understanding of System Dynamics
Multiple Perspectives
Issues of Power and Hierarchy
- Develop skills in the use of tools for change including;
Six Thinking Hats
Multiple Perspectives Wheel
